What is a Social Security Address Trace (SSN Trace)?
In the United States, a Social Security Number (SSN) is a nine-digit number issued to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and temporary residents under section 205 of the Social Security Act. A Social Security Address Trace (SSN Trace) is a foundational database search that provides the year of issuance, state of issuance, and a historical record of names and addresses associated with a specific Social Security Number. As the starting point for any comprehensive background check, it uncovers significantly more details than a standard single-name or single-address search.
How it works
The SSN Trace utilizes commercial credit data and U.S. Postal Service records (such as utility bills and subscriptions) to compile a history of names and addresses tied to the applicant's SSN. This geographical footprint dictates which specific county or federal jurisdictions should be searched for criminal records. It also gathers additional name identifiers to ensure high accuracy when matching criminal court records to your applicant.
What the SSN Trace Is NOT
- Not a basis for adverse action: You cannot deny employment based on the results of an SSN Trace. It is strictly a tool to verify information and guide further research.
- Not proof of work eligibility: It does not indicate an applicant's legal right to work in the United States or their immigration status.
Viewing Your Results
- On the Final Report: To maintain a clean view, the final Verified First report displays only the search status (e.g., Complete or Review) and an estimated date range of when the SSN was originally issued. It will not display alias or address information.
- Within the Applicant File: The raw data—including developed addresses and potential alias names—is still fully accessible. You can view this information directly within the applicant's file by clicking on the Social Security Address Trace search name (see screenshot below).
Why Include a Social Security Address Trace?
Anyone ordering a criminal background check must include an SSN Trace as the baseline of their order. It serves as the roadmap for the rest of the screening process by:
- Identifying undisclosed jurisdictions for targeted county and federal searches.
- Providing critical aliases and identifiers that link criminal records to the correct candidate.
- Helping confirm or clear discrepancies found in county or federal court results.
